From Stigma to Strength: Understanding Disability Across Generations

July 21, 2 - 3 p.m.

The Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is hosting a training exploring how perceptions of disability have evolved over time and how those perspectives continue to influence the workplace. Participants will examine key historical frameworks, including religious, medical, and social models of disability, along with significant moments such as eugenics, the repeal of “Ugly Laws” and landmark legislation like the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

The session also highlights how different generations of Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z tend to view disability, accommodation and workplace accessibility. By understanding these perspectives, HR professionals and supervisors will be better equipped to foster supportive environments, navigate communication challenges and support employees with disabilities effectively.

Participants will leave with practical strategies to reduce bias, improve compliance, and create a workplace culture rooted in respect, equity and accessibility.

Topics include:
• Historical models of disability and how they influence workplace practices today
• Key legislation and milestones that shaped disability rights and employment access
• Generational perspectives on disclosure, accommodation, and accessibility
• Strategies for reducing bias and improving communication across age groups
• Building workplace cultures that support equity, compliance, and belonging

The event is in Mountain Time.
