Win or Lose: Learning from Real Discrimination Cases

Aug. 18, 2 - 3 p.m.

The Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is hosting a training to challenge participants to step into the role of decision-maker by analyzing real-world legal cases involving disability discrimination in the workplace. Through guided case studies, HR managers and supervisors will examine common pitfalls in hiring practices, breakdowns in the interactive process, and improper denials of reasonable accommodations under laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Participants will review actual employer missteps, predict case outcomes (“win or lose”), and compare their decisions to real court rulings. This hands-on approach builds practical understanding of legal obligations while highlighting how seemingly small decisions can lead to significant legal and financial consequences. By the end of the session, attendees will be better equipped to identify risk, engage in compliant decision-making, and confidently navigate accommodation and hiring situations in alignment with the law.

Topics include:
• Overview of key disability employment laws and employer responsibilities
• Common legal mistakes in hiring, accommodation, and workplace management
• How courts evaluate the interactive process and accommodation decisions
• Risk awareness and proactive compliance strategies
• Applying legal lessons to real workplace scenarios
